  • Conference Components

The conference features four key components:
  • 1. A series of talks and informative discussions that raises awareness about issues related to broader participation and academic success in STEM disciplines. These talks provide students with valuable information and skills on: navigating through the graduate school admissions process, identifying and overcoming common obstacles faced in graduate school, mentoring, and motivational words of inspiration.

    2. A research symposium featuring poster and oral presentations by undergraduate and graduate students, all judged by a team of faculty (a research abstract must be submitted at the time of registration.)

    3. A networking session where graduate programs as well as corporations and laboratories advertise opportunities at their organizations. This enables students to gather information about graduate study opportunities offered at the institutions represented as well as career and internship opportunities offered at corporations represented.

We invite universities and organizations to participate in the networking session by reserving table space to distribute hand-outs and advertise career and internship opportunities to prospective candidates. Participation will provide:

    • Access to the best and brightest underrepresented minority students soon to graduate with a degree in science
    • Ad space in the conference program book
    • An opportunity to meet colleagues from other institutions and organizations

    4. The newest feature of the GSS Conference is an Open House which will provide prospective applicants with a thorough overview of the graduate programs offered within STEM at Stony Brook University, which includes an opportunity to engage Graduate Program Directors in a discussion about the specifics of the graduate program, the admissions process, and so forth as well as an opportunity to tour the cutting-edge laboratory facilities.
