For the past twenty-five years, Narayan Hegde has been on the Humanities and Languages faculty at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury where he is a professor of comparative literature. At Stony Brook University, Professor Hegde teaches courses on Indian literature. Growing up in India, Narayan Hegde had exposure to literatures in Kannada, Sanskrit, Hindi, and English languages. He did his graduate studies in English literature at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where, in 1980, he received his Ph.D. for his thesis on the Influence of Indian Thought on W. B. Yeats. He is an acknowledged scholar on the life and writing of the Irish poet W. B. Yeats. An award winning translator of important Indian writers, Professor Hegde most recently has edited and translated into English Stallion of the Sun and Other Stories by the well known Indian writer, U. R. Anantha Murthy. Professor Hegde is a three-time recipient of the senior fellowship of the American Institute of Indian Studies. He visits India frequently to undertake projects of translating literary works from his native language, Kannada.
