Aruna Sharma grew up in a musical environment inspired by her father, who was a lawyer by profession and was a devoted patron of Indian music. Aruna learned classical Music first with Ustad Jamal Khan and later under professors Nadkarni and Mrs Sudha Srivastva, the finest musicians and musicologists of Rajasthan.

She received her Ph.D in music from Rajasthan University under the guidance of Dr. B.L Sharma. She has explored a new area in her research work titled "The Role of Samvad in the Development of Indian Music and Raga".

Aruna taught as a member of the music faculty at Savitri College, Ajmer. Since 1997 she has been teaching at the state university of New York at Stony Brook.
