MISSION

In concert with the mission of Stony Brook University , the Academic and Pre-Professional Advising Center promotes undergraduate students’ development and academic success by:

  • Providing high quality academic advising to help students grow intellectually and personally.
  • Facilitating students’ academic transition into and through Stony Brook.
  • Offering proactive communication, programs, and services that engage students and foster academic connections with the diverse community of scholars.
  • Fostering strong, respectful, and meaningful advisor-advisee relationships that focus on the unique growth and development of each student.
  • Providing academic support and guidance to students in the decision-making process related to major choice and academic program, including advising about the health and law professions.
  • Promoting students’ self-responsibility in defining and achieving their educational goals.

The staff in the Academic & Pre-Professional Advising Center aims to assist you in the following areas:

  • Serve as a central, beginning resource to inform you of available options.
  • Help you define, develop, and achieve realistic educational goals.
  • Assist you in planning and monitoring an academic program consistent with your abilities and interests.
  • Communicate and interpret instructional policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Refer you to appropriate academic and student services campus resources.
  • Inform you of special services available for academic assistance.
  • Foster a respectful advisor-advisee relationship that focuses on you as a unique individual.

As an advisee, you also have some important responsibilities:

  • Read the Stony Brook Undergraduate Bulletin (http://www.sunysb.edu/ugbulletin) and Academic and Pre-Professional Advising Center website (http://www.sunysb.edu/aadvising) before seeking academic advice.
  • Become knowledgeable about and adhere to Stony Brook policies, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Prepare for advising sessions and bring appropriate resources and materials (i.e., Undergraduate Bulletin, Degree Requirement Guidelines, Class Schedule and/or Unofficial Transcript printed from the Solar System.)
  • Follow through on recommended steps identified during each advising session.
  • Attend Academic & Pre-Professional Advising Center special programs and events.
  • Accept final responsibility for your decisions.
