AFRICANA STUDIES ALUMNI NEWS

The Department of Africana Studies has over 200 alumni. These graduates of Stony Brook University received either a major or a minor in Africana Studies. Many earned a double major or minor. In addition, numerous other students graduated with a concentration in Africana Studies.

Cozier, Lisa A.- Class of 1993; Major Africana Studies. I decided to go back to school for Nursing. While working as an administrative Assistant at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, I took classes part-time at Nassau Community College. I completed my Nursing Degree in December 2001 I am married with two children and currently working at an 1199-SEIU healthcare facility in Brooklyn, New York



Crosbourne, Tracey A. - Class of 1996; Double major Africana Studies and English. I have a successful career in Georgia as a Consultant in Information Technology. I also belong to a local church and donate my time and money to various charities.



Marie Ketchem-Berberich. Class of - I recently began a 2 year program in Nursing. By December 2006, I hope to have completed the required coursework and will sit form my boards to become licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State. Peace and God’s Blessing to You All.



Marson, Judith - Class of 1993; Double major Africana Studies & Psychology. I am currently working at Merrill Lynch as a Senior Specialist in the Global Investment and Client Technologies division.



Olosunde, T. Olubunmi -Class of 2003; Double major in Africana Studies and Sociology. I received an M.A. in Africana Studies, SUNY Albany (Fall 2004). I am currently a New York City public school teacher. I plan to begin Ph.D. studies in the Fall 2006.a



Seegars, Gerald- Class of 1984; Double major in Africana Studies and Political Science and a minor in Technology and Society. When I attended Stony Brook, The Africana Studies Dept. was a vital lifeline that kept me going in a place that was not the most accommodating to Black Men. The AFS faculty played an important role in my graduating from Stony Brook and getting into Law School. I’ve worked as a paralegal for the Manhattan Law Firms of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton and for Loeb and Loeb. Upon graduating from George Washington Law School, Washington, DC, in 1990, I began working for the US Dept. of Commerce, Patent and Trademark Office, eventually achieving the rank of Senior Examining Trademark Attorney. Currently, I am the manager of The Kabaka Group, LLC, which invests in residential and multi-family housing in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia and the Principal Broker of Urbane Realty, LLC. Still practice on a limited basis and I have a son Gerald De Von Seegars.



Williams, Michael- Class of 1988; Africana Studies Major. I worked in administration for Suffolk County Community College for two years before going to work in banking. Recently, after 14 years in Branch Banking and Commercial & Residential Lending, I went into real estate development in East Harlem, New York, as Chief Financial Officer. We manage about 350 residential and commercial units throughout Harlem, the Bronx, and Westchester and are expanding into Hastings on Hudson, New Rochelle, and Bridgeport, CT.
