AFS 283 COMMUNITY SERVICE
Department of Africana Studies, Stony Brook University
What is community service and who is eligible for this highly important academic and cultural commitment at Stony Brook University? Africana Studies at Stony Brook is more than thirty years old. From the beginning, it was thought that students involved with the AFS Department should go beyond the academics curriculum. We wanted our students to understand what it meant to “give back to the community.” The AFS faculty felt it was important for the students to perform a service for the benefit of the community, both on and off campus. The faculty and students established service and outreach programs on campus and beyond. Any U3 or U4 student enrolled in Stony Brook University in good standing may take AFS 283 Community Service. It is a “permission only” course granted through the Department of Africana Studies.
MISSION
The mission of the Department of Africana Studies Community course is to work with students representing the various organizations, programs, and cultural endeavors to benefit the campus and community.
