Earn six credits during the winter recess on the island of Barbados, experiencing and examining at first hand fascinating aspects of the society and culture of this independent Caribbean nation, small in size, and great in history, in social and economic development, as well as in natural beauty. The program will be directed by Dr. E. Anthony Hurley, a native Barbadian and a professor in the Department of Africana Studies.
ACADEMIC COMPONENTS
Program participants will receive six upper-division credits for the following courses: AFS 391 – Topics in Africana Studies: Barbadian Culture, and AFS 421 – Topics in Africana Studies: Sociopolitical Perspectives on Barbados.SCHEDULE
The program will begin in late December with pre-departure orientation and instructional sessions at Stony Brook during the first week. Students will then travel to Barbados where formal classroom instruction in the mornings will be integrated with structured and unstructured field work during the afternoons for the next three weeks. Afternoon and weekend activities will include narrated tours to the following historical and cultural sites: Barbados Museum, Sugar factory, Slave houses, Plantation Museum, Houses of Parliament, Marine Museum (Belairs), Pelican Village, Barbados Gallery of Art, and Harrison’s Cave, as well as a Historical Tour of Bridgetown and a Historical Bus Excursion (island tour). Local professional historians and other experts will provide narration and instruction for these activities.ACCOMMODATION
Students will reside in modern single room units at the University of the West Indies – Cave Hill for the first part of the trip and then in double-occupancy rooms at a beach-side hotel on the island’s south coast. Breakfast and dinner are included in the accommodation costs.COST
