Previous Seed Grant Winners
Where are they now?
In 2001, John Parise of the Department of Geosciences and the Department of Chemistry was awarded a seed grant for his proposal High pressure synthesis and characterization with synchrotron x-ray of BiMn03.
This funding allowed him to establish a collaboration with Tom Vogt at BNL and this work led directly to the successful application for an NSF DMR grant (which expired last year and was renewed for an additional 3 years).
Without this seed funding Dr. Parise’s student Yongjae Lee could not have started his career in high pressure at BNL Physics. He is now a BNL employee (though his undergraduate school in Korea is making a big push to get him to go back). This grant also involved Jeramie Koonz, a young summer scholar who carried out some of the synthetic work in the high pressure lab here at Stony brook.
For the work begun under the seed Yongjae has received the awards from the high pressure 2002 Alvin Van Valkenburg Award, MSA crystallography award and , and Sidhu Award, "In regognition of outstanding accomplishments in the field of High-Pressure Crystallography and Pressure-Dependent Chemistry in Nanopores", 60th Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 3-5, 2002.
The papers produced from this collaboraton have impacted present graduate student (Charles Martin) and provided an entree int work at X7A
