Where are they now?

 

In 2002, Kanokporn Noy Rithidech, of the Department of Pathology, received a grant for his proposal, "Gene Expression Profiles following in vivo exposure to ionizing radiation."

The purpose of this research proposal was to establish the technique for examining gene expression profiles in the spleen tissue collected from mice exposed whole body to different doses of ionizing radiation. THe team has accomplished our goal and Dr. Rithidech along with Dr. Dunn of BNL submitted a grant proposal to NASA in 2003 (Grant Title: Induction of Leukemia by HZE particles). While the grant did not receive NASA funding, the research collaboration between SBU and BNL continues to steadily move forward with plans to submit a grant application to the Department of Defense.

In addition to the above mentioned activity, Dr. Rithidech has used the technique established from his Seed Grant project to examine the expression pattern of various genes as a function of radiation dose (ranging from 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 1.0 Gy) time post-irradiation (1 and 4 hrs). This is part of the research project funded by the DOE (contract # DE-FG02-02ER63311, 2002-2005, PI: K. Rithidech, Total cost $953,965). The results suggest different molecular mechanisms in the early response to high (1.0 Gy) or low doses (0.05 and .01 Gy) of ionizing radiation of hematopoietic cells exposed in vivo. The results also indicate the importance of further studies on gene/protein expression profiles following exposure to low dose radiation.
