Previous Seed Grant Winners
Where are they now?
In 2003 Steven Skiena of the Department of Computer Science was awarded a seed grant for his proposal "Computational Analysis of Genomic Sequence Tags"
With respect to interaction with BNL, his work has lead to the following publication with BNL authors:
D.
Papamichail, S. McCorkle, D. van der Lelie, and S. Skiena
Bacterial Population Assay via k-mer Analysis Third Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics
Conference (APBC 2005) Singapore, January 17-21, 2005. Series on Advances in
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology 1 (2005) 299-308.
Further, BNL has continued to support the student involved (Dimitris Papamichail) and intends to continue to do so for the rest of his graduate career.
But
more than this, the SBU/BNL seed grant was essential in maintaining Professor
Skiena’s research program at a time when he was between grants. It enabled
Dr. Skiena to support and equip a fresh graduate student to keep his research
going. Since then, Professor Skiena has received two NSF grants and his research
activities are thriving.
