Previous Seed Grant Winners
Where are they now?
In 2002, Stanislaus Wong of the Department of Chemistry was awarded a seed grant for his proposal,"Microscopy of Biomolecular Structures."
Although this project received further funding after the seed grant and has been worked on for a number of years, with several students, the results are inconclusive. The results seem to suggest that there is a qualitative variation of biomolecule density as a function of time in air. However, it is not evident that this effect can be quantified properly.
In 2004, Stanislaus Wong of the Department of Chemistry was awarded a seed grant for his proposal, "Probing Potential Cellular Toxicity of Purified Carbon Nanotubes and Perovskite Nanotubes."
The second project has been very promising in that they have been able to establish connections not only in Materials Science but also with Biology at BNL. Professor Wong has expanded the scope of the project to include nanotube-based sensors and believes that these results may eventually lead to the creation of a nanoscience institute doing research in cancer applications.
