Student Responsibility

Statement of Student Responsibility

Students themselves are responsible for reviewing, understanding, and abiding by the University's regulations, procedures, requirements, and deadlines as described in all official publications and our websites. These publications include, but are not limited to, the Schedule of Classes, Undergraduate and Graduate Bulletins, and Student Advising Handbook.

Important: All tuition and fees listed under Financial Information for Spring 2008 and future semesters, (including but not limited to: tuition, fees, housing and meal plan costs, and late payment fees) provided in the 2007-09 Online Undergraduate Bulletin were printed as of April 2007, and are subject to change by the State of New York and/or Stony Brook University.

The Bursar/Student Account website provides much of the information that a Stony Book University student will need regarding billing and payment related issues. To aid our students in understanding their responsibilities, we would also like to emphasize these important items:

The student is the customer.
According to federal law, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, all of a student's college records, including the financial account, are the property and responsibility of the student. All billing statements and notices are sent to the student, even if another person may be paying the student's bills. The University may not discuss specific aspects of a student's account without written authorization from the student.
Online Access to Current Financial Information on SOLAR:
The university provides an on-line information system which the student can access to register, de-register, check financial aid and student account balances, and make credit card payments. Because billing statements represent a student account at a given point in time, students are encouraged to regularly review their account information on SOLAR for the most current financial information, including any financial holds that may prevent transcripts, diplomas and enrollment.
Payment Deadlines & Late Fees:
Fall and Spring semester payment deadlines are published on billing statements, the Bursar's web site and are available at 631-632-BILL. If your account is not paid in full or has approved anticipated aid by the payment due date, a $40.00 late fee will be charged to your account, up to a maximum of $150.00 per semester. Only financial aid that is fully processed and displayed as Anticipated Aid on the What Do I Owe screen on SOLAR is considered approved and authorized. Pending or unprocessed financial aid is not considered approved. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid in the Spring for the following Fall registration. Payments are date stamped upon receipt and processed in date received order. Summer sessions charges are due in full 7 days after registration.
