Environmental Education
Marine Science – Shellfish Restoration ProgramSuffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center
(Operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Suffolk County Marine Division)
Campers participating in this program will be afforded the opportunity to study the dynamics of a Coastal Marine Wetland system, examining the inter-relationships (ecology) of plants and animals that inhabit Salt Marsh environments. Participants will become actively engaged in studying various shellfish, such as oysters, clams, scallops, and mussels, that have become an integral part of Long Island’s history and economy. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s innovative community shellfish production program, S.P.A.T. (Southold Project in Aquaculture Training), will thoroughly engage campers in this unique hands-on experience.
Campers will also have the opportunity to sample various dishes prepared from their harvested shellfish. Long Island marine wetlands play a vital role in the overall ecological well-being of our Long Island’s salt water resources, and participants will learn to understand the role of providing stewardship of this fragile system.
