Trout Stream Habitat Assessment Campers will experience the challenge of visiting a classic Long Island glacial spring-fed stream to assess the stream’s overall condition and its specific suitability as a sustainable trout stream. A macro invertebrate (insect) sampling will be initiated and the resulting data regarding specific specie abundance and distribution will be evaluated to determine the overall stream quality of the Carmen’s River.
Additionally quantitative testing will be done (i.e., water temperature, Ph, dissolved oxygen, nutrient levels, stream flow, depositional formations, vegetative species both native and non-native and stream bank stabilization will be assessed). Rosgen’s stream Morphology protocol will be utilized to classify the stream and recommend a stream improvement program if deemed necessary.
Participants will also be exposed to the world of fly-fishing and fly tying; accomplished instructors will work with campers to teach the basics of fly tying, casting and fly-fishing.
The hands-on project will also include a trip to the Connetquot River State Park for a day of trout fishing using flies that the campers have tied.
