Guidelines for Awarding Discretionary Increases
Discretionary salary adjustments are based on a combination of criteria which should include individual productivity and performance, availability of funds, internal parity, and equity considerations between similarly responsible positions.
Employees are eligible to receive a discretionary salary increase one time during the fiscal year on one of the following effective dates:
- July 1st of the Fiscal Year. Employee must have completed 6 months of prior continuous service.
- Anniversary of employment date.
- Anniversary of project. Employee must have completed 6 months of prior continuous service.
Discretionary awards may be granted as a one-time, lump-sum payment, either in addition to, or in lieu of, a discretionary salary increase which would be built into the employee's base salary. A discretionary award that is a combination of a lump sum payment and base salary increase must be processed on the same effective date during the award period.
Since performance is a primary factor in determining an employee's discretionary salary increase, it is strongly recommended that a performance evaluation be given in conjunction with the award.
Note: The Dean of the School of Medicine and the VP for the HSC requires that Research Foundation employees with Patient Contact or Regular Clinical Contact receive a performance evaluation to meet JCAHO standards.
Discretionary increases over 10% require the Over Ten Percent Justification Form and will be reviewed by Classification and COmpensation.
Awards that result in salary rates above the salary range maximum will be reviewed by Classification and Compensation and must be approved by the Vice President for the Research Foundation.
Requests for all discretionary increases should be sent with appropriate supporting documentation to Madeline Ricciardi, Human Resource Services, 390 Administration Building, Z=0751.
