Students participate in both on-campus and off-campus news internships every semester. Faculty mentors follow the interns' progress, meeting regularly to help students develop both craft and workplace savvy. Among the organizations where Stony Brook student journalists have interned in the past year are the Southampton Press, Newsday, The Daily News, News12 and Glamour magazine.
SBU School of Journalism Teams Up With the School of Atmospheric Sciences for Seminar Series
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and the School of
Journalism are teaming up to present” "From Peer to Public: Communicating Science to a Wider Audience"
This seminar series is designed to engage science students and faculty in effectively communicating research to public audiences including other scientists, journalists, policy makers and the public as a whole.
The fall series will be headlined by Julia Mead of SBU's School of Journalism presenting "Science as Metaphor: The Interplay of Source and Target in Communicating Useful Information to a Mainstream Audience" on Tuesday, September 16th at 7pm in the Wang
Center. This one hour workshop will focus on using metaphors to communicate research and promises to provide humor from both 'good' and 'bad' examples of scientists communicating with the public. For more information about this workshop, see attached flier.
All undergraduate, graduate students and faculty from any discipline are invited to participate. We expect to line up the rest of our speakers soon, so keep an eye out for the series listing.
