David Bynum, Ph.D.

Dr. Bynum founded LIGASE in 1995 to improve science education opportunities at all levels. He has received numerous awards for his work, including most recently the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service and the President’s Award for Excellence in Diversity & Affirmative Action. Dr. Bynum's national honors include the American Society for Cell Biology Bruce Alberts Award for Outstanding Contributions to Science Education and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. His accomplishments at Stony Brook include receiving over 11 M $ in external funding, the development of nine new hands-on undergraduate and graduate biology courses, the remodeling and equipping of six new laboratories for science education, the creation of a masters degree in biology teaching program that is the largest graduate education program on campus, and the creation of partnerships between Stony Brook, high schools and community colleges.

Janet Andersen, Ph.D.

Dr. Andersen is a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology. She has received several research awards and honors including the Irving Abraham's Award for Excellence in Graduate Research. Dr. Andersen is a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. She is also a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers.


Caren Gough, Ed.M.

Ms. Gough is a lecturer for the Science Education Program. She also serves as a Regional Biology Mentor for New York. Ms. Gough has received several awards including being named Teacher of the Month by Hofstra University and Channel 12 News, as well as receiving the Jenkins Award from the Half Hollow Hills School District. Ms. Gough has been a member of the Teacher Advisory Council in conjunction with the National Academies of Sciences, a member of the advisory panel and teacher fellow for several Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory web sites. In addition, she has been a pilot mentor for a problem based learning program sponsored by the University of Rochester Medical School.


Joan Kiely, M.S.

Professor Kiely is an instructor for the Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory. She developed and teaches courses such as Current Topics in Microbiology for Teachers, Curriculum Development for Secondary School Teachers, and DNA Literacy for Stony Brook University Honors College Students. Professor Kiely is also an instructor for several summer programs including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute High School Scholars Program and the Summer Biotechnology Camp for High School Students.


Daniel Moloney, Ph.D.

Dr. Moloney is currently an Instructor/Education Specialist in the Department of Biochemistry. He serves as the director of the Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory and instructor for the BIOPREP summer outreach program. He also instructs for both the Howard Hughes Medical Institute High School Scholar and Biotechnology Summer Camp programs. He is the Course Director and Instructor for BIO 103, Introduction to Biotechnology. Dr. Moloney has earned several awards and honors including the Albert Einstein Scholar Award and the Harry Eagle Scholar Award.


Linda Padwa, M.A.T.

Professor Padwa is the Director of Field Experiences for the Science Education Program. She also serves as an Education Specialist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Department of Chemistry. Professor Padwa has received several awards including most recently the Suffolk STANYS Service Award and the Tandy Technology Scholar Award for Teachers. In addition to her numerous activities and professional affiliations, Professor Padwa is the Director of the LISEF Discovery Fair, which is a science fair for students in grades 6-8 that is held each year in March, and co-director of the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad.


Keith Sheppard, Ph.D.

Dr. Keith Sheppard joined LIGASE as Director of the Science Education Program and Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.  Prior to joining us, Dr. Sheppard coordinated the Science Education Program at Columbia University where he also directed the pre-service and in-service teacher education programs.  Keith has published widely on the history of science education, presented his work nationally and internationally, and serves as a reviewer on several science education journals.  He has also taught and directed programs in the United Kingdom and Tanzania. 


Zuzana Zachar, Ph.D.

Dr. Zachar is the Director of the Masters in Education in Biology Program for the LIGASE Education Program, Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology. She also serves as a Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Zachar has received several honors and awards including being named an American Fellow of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Of the various students that she has supervised over the last 13 years, several subsequently completed postgraduate professional degrees (two MDs; two PhDs in Biological Sciences; one MS in Genetic Counseling). Two of her students successfully competed for a Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship.


Patrick Aro
Instructional Support Technician

Mr. Aro is the Instructional Support Technician for the LIGASE office. He received his Bachelor of Science at Stony Brook University in 2000. In the past he has served as a research technician and has also lectured on gene and molecular cloning, PCR, bacterial protein expression, western blotting, and immunology based detection.


Judy Nimmo
Administrator

Ms. Nimmo has administered the LIGASE programs for over a decade. She has over 15 years of increasingly responsible experience in overseeing large multiyear awards from several different granting agencies. These awards involve public school and college partners and require coordination of efforts from numerous university departmental and administrative areas.
