University Police Motor Scooter Patrol Unit
Through a multiple task approach the motor scooter patrol fills an important role in our police department. The motorbikes provide benefits in visibility as well as location access. The community response has been a positive one to the program. The capability to reach areas that cars are blocked from is important for quick response to calls for assistance. The ability to reach out and speak to a community member is a community policing goal. The scooters provide the omnipresent of foot/bicycle patrols with the speed of vehicle response.
The program initially started in May of 1998 with the purchase of two Yamaha 125cc police scooters. Both vehicles were outfitted and equipped for patrol duties. The training of 7 members of the department including one supervisor followed. The training regimen was arranged and conducted by a professional motorcycle school. The basics of safe operation as well as emergency maneuvers were stressed.
Safe Operation
A few words on operating a motorcycle. Safety is paramount!
- Obey the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law. Obtain all proper permits and licensing. Correctly and courteously follow all rules of the road.
- Always wear a helmet. Purchase one that fits correctly. Ask for help in doing this. The two grading standards for helmets are DOT approved and SNELL certified. Your helmet must be one of these.
- Check your equipment. Make sure your motorcycle is in correct operating condition. Anything improper, attend to immediately for your safety as well as others. All your riding gear should be highly visible (bright colors & reflectors) to other drivers. Always have rain gear with you regardless of clear skies.
- Relaxed alertness is the best mental outlook to have while riding. Be well rested and capable of the trip your about to take. Constantly scan the traffic around you. Be aware of anything that affects your riding whether it is mechanical or environmental.
