The Art of Balance: Cool Climate/Maritime Wines in a Global Context
August 5 & 6, 2008
The Stony Brook University Center for Wine, Food, and Culture will host a major international symposium titled "The Art of Balance: Cool Climate/Maritime Wines in a Global Context," at its Southampton campus on Long Island. The two-day symposium will feature advanced educational presentations and wine tastings led by prominent winemakers and vineyard managers from top wineries in cool climate/maritime winegrowing regions around the world.
This event marks the 20-year anniversary of the first groundbreaking conference of its kind, “Maritime Climate Wine Growing: Bringing Bordeaux to Long Island,” which was staged in Riverhead in summer 1988 and drew participants from Chateau Margaux, Chateau Pichon-Lalande, and Institut Technique de la Vigne et du Vin, Montpelier. This new symposium for 2008 is the result of an innovative partnership between the host, Stony Brook University Center for Wine, Food, and Culture, the primary funding agency New York Wine and Grape Foundation, and the organizing committee Long Island Wine Council.
To stage this 20th anniversary symposium, owners and managers from Long Island’s own 40 wineries are joining forces with some of the world’s leading wine-growers to lead two days of educational talks and wine tastings. This symposium will highlight the renewed appreciation of balanced, elegant, lower alcohol wines and afford an opportunity to talk and taste with some of the world’s leading cool/maritime climate wine producers. Both exciting and timely, the symposium program coupled with the relaxed atmosphere of summertime on Long Island’s East End will afford a wonderful experience to all those who participate.
The symposium will be of special interest to New York’s wine and culinary community: winery and vineyard owners and managers; restaurant sommeliers; chefs; retail store professionals; wine educators; wine and food critics; and the wine and food press. It is also open to interested members of the general public. The symposium sessions will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 5-6, 2008, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, on the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University.
The Grand Tasting will be held on Tuesday, August 5, from 5:30–8:30 pm, featuring more than 200 wines from conference participants and the 40 wineries of Long Island, paired with exquisite regional fare from some of Long Island's finest restaurants. Don't miss this wonderful event on a summer evening in the Hamptons. Tickets for the Grand Tasting are $75 per person.
