Of the forty Intel Science Talent Search finalists selected nationwide,
three finalists did their research at Stony Brook. They are:
Patrick Abejar from Smithtown High School West, Smithtown
who worked with Dr. Troy Rasbury in Geosciences
Project: Utilizing Boron Isotopic Secular Variation as a Proxy to
Assess Climate Change
Preya Shah from Ward Melville HS/*INSTAR, East Setauket
who worked with Dr. Iwao Ojima in Chemistry
Project: Combating Cancer: Design and Synthesis of Dual-Warhead
Tumor-Targeting Drug Conjugates
Christine Shrock from Ward Melville HS/*INSTAR, East Setauket
who worked with Dr. Carlos Simmerling in Chemistry
Project: Effects of Lid Dynamics of MDM2 to the Tumor Suppressor
Protein p53: Implications for Cancer Therapeutics
Of the 300 Intel semifinalists selected nationwide this year (announced
1/14/09), 25 did research with Stony Brook faculty mentors from the
departments of Anesthesiology, Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Biomedical
Engineering, Cardiology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences,
Marine & Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), Materials Science & Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacological Sciences, Physics &
Astronomy, and Psychology.
Each semifinalist receives a $1,000 award with an additional $1,000 going
to his or her respective school. The 40 finalists receive a new laptop;
and in early March attend the Science Talent Institute in Washington D.C.
where they will be awarded scholarships ranging from $5,000 to the top
prize of a $100,000 scholarship.
