A note on science competitions

FAQ:
"Must all students admitted to the program as Simons Fellows compete in a national science competition?"

By no means!

Despite the impressive numbers of students who've achieved success in regional/national science competitions as a result of their research with SB faculty, it should be emphasized that a Simons Program summer project is subject to time constraints and will not generally satisfy the more comprehensive eligibility requirements for submission to science fairs/competitions (i.e. Intel ISEF, Intel STS or Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology) unless considerable follow-up work is done on the research project by mutual agreement between the Simons Fellow and his/her university faculty mentor.

Prof. Rafailovich, Director of the Garcia Research Scholars Program, known for her outstanding mentoring success in national science competitions, sets the record straight about Stony Brook, reminding us that this university is not about being "a highly successful 'science competition mill.' This is by far not what we do. Our goal is to introduce these students to the cutting edge research being performed at Stony Brook and have them become full partners in this exciting enterprise. We hope and view that this research experience is their gateway into a lifetime of learning and accomplishments in science. "
