Information For International Students
Students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States typically enter the U.S. in non-immigrant F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor status. Certificates of Eligibility (Form I-20 for F-1 status or Form DS2019 for J-1 status) will be required when applying for an F-1 or J-1 visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad.
Certificates of Eligibility are issued to students who have been admitted to a full-time program of study at Stony Brook University, have provided proof of financial support for their proposed program of study, and have provided proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL scores*). SPD admits international students for the fall and spring terms exclusively (summer matriculation is not available).

Minimum TOEFL Examination Scores
Minimum TOEFL exam scores required for admission to Stony Brook University:
Paper-based test: 550
Computer-based test: 213
Internet-based test: 90*
IELTS: overall score of 6.5
*In addition to the minimum score of 90 on the internet-based exam, each subsection score must be at least a 22.
Students who have scored lower than a 22 on any one subsection can not be admitted to Stony Brook.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to take the TSE?
The TSE is not required for admission to the School of Professional Development (SPD).
Any PhD student or student with a stipend (TA, GA, RA) whose native language is not English must score 55 or above on the TSE or SPEAK test OR obtain a score of 7.0 or better in the speaking component of the IELTS test. If the TSE is not available, you may take the SPEAK test upon arrival at Stony Brook.
What if I have my official Examinee (Personal) score report for my TOEFL/IELTS/TSE exam? Can I just make a copy of it?
No, the School of Professional Development (SPD) requires that students contact Educational Testing Services (ETS) and have them send official score reports directly to Stony Brook University. Our institution code is 2548.
When should I take the TOEFL?
Please schedule to take the exam in time for the School of Professional Development (SPD) deadline for the semester to which you are applying.
Be aware, as well, that it takes time for ETS to send these scores to SPD. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that he/she has taken the test and ordered that the scores be sent to SPD in time for admissions evaluation by the department. Any delay in the receipt of the TOEFL score will impede application evaluation and processing.
What if I took the TOEFL exam years ago?
SPD will not accept any test scores that are more than one year older than the application date to the program.
What is meant by “native and primary language”?
Native or primary speakers of English have been raised or educated in an English-speaking environment. Native or primary speakers may speak a language other than English at home, but speak English exclusively outside the home in social and/or educational contexts.
