Program Description

The focus of this program is to provide students with a deeper knowledge of Italian culture, art and society. Three major areas that cover different aspects of Italian culture will be analyzed: Fresco & Fresco Restoration, Art History, Italian Cuisine and Wines. This program provides an experience enriched with museum visits, field trips and full immersion in Italian culture.

The Fresco Workshop includes lectures, hands-on technical workshops and field trips. Art Hisotry slide lectures will be supplemented by visits to museums, churches and palazzi. Cuisine classes consist of historical and technical lectures, followed by cooking classes and wine tastings.

This program is organized exclusively for the School of Professional Development at Stony Brook. It incorporates a range of focused seminars and workshops that will enable students to develop the tools required for a deep knowledge of Italian culture and for exploring relationships across and between cultures. Sessions will be interactive and intellectually stimulating and will involve preliminary and follow-up discussions.

Florence University of the Arts

Florence University of the Arts is located in one of the leading educational and cultural centers of Italy. Its location offers students the intellectual and aesthetic stimulation, which fueled some of the greastest artists of Italy and the world.

As an urban institute, Florence University of the Arts is comprised of several buildings. The school's main building houses classrooms as well as the university's administrative offices, and is located at Via Magliabechi 1, steps away from the Santa Croce Church (Basilica di Santa Croce). The room used as the "aula magna" (large meeting room) was once the Doni family master bedroom, where Michelangelo's commissioned work was displayed. The palazzo is large and provides an ideal setting for the studios, classrooms, administrative offices, internet facilities and library located within.

Apicius - the Culinary Institute of Florence

Apicius, founded in 1996 as a private institution for Higher Education, is located in the historic center of Florence. An internationally respected leader in academic, professional and career oriented education. Apicius is located downtown Florence.

A city renowned for its art, food, wine and hospitality. A convenient 5-minute talk from the Central San Lorenzo Area. The student population is international, classes are unique held in state-of-the-art facilities.

Program Highlights

This in-depth exploration of Italian culture in situ has as its focus three major areas that are synonymous with the cultural achievements of Italy:

Fresco & Fresco Restoration: Lectures and hands-on technical workshops and field trips
Art History: Lectures will be supplemented by visits to museums, churches and palazzi
Italian Cuisine & Wines: Classes consist of historical and technical lectures, followed by cooking classes and wine tastings

These areas will be examined and presented in multi-faceted ways which will enable students to make connections with their own cultural backgrounds, and to achieve a composite understanding of Italian Culture.

Living Arrangements

Students will be housed in apartments in the center of Florence. Housing is based on double occupancy in a four person apartment. Single rooms in apartments are available at an additional cost.

Stony Brook University includes International health insurance in program fees.

Eligibility

All graduate students in good academic standing may apply. Language proficiency is NOT required.

3 Graduate Credit Option: $2,600* program fee includes housing, excursions, museums, breakfast, lunches and dinners as outlined in program detail, as well as international health insurance
