Study Abroad (Takes place during the entirety of Winter Session)

Akwaaba (Welcome)

Ghana, located on the coast of West Africa, was the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence in 1957. Students who visit this land rich in gold, cocoa, and culture will learn a variety of topics including but not limited to: West African dance and drumming, Chieftaincy rituals, and the story of the "Golden Stool." Students will be based in Accra, Ghana's capital and largest city, with a weekend excursion to Kumasi, home of the Ashanti Palace.

  • Work with distinguished faculty from Stony Brook University
  • See places of artistic, cultural and historic interest

Courses Offered

AFS 421 Topics in Africana Studies - 3 credits

 

AFS 487 Research in Africana Studies - 1 credit

Individual research projects in the Black Experience carried out under the direct supervision of a faculty member.

Living Arrangements

Students will be housed in the University Guest Center at the University of Legon.

Health Insurance

Stony Brook University includes international health insurance in program fees.

 

Eligibility

All undergraduate college students in good academic standing may apply. There is NO language requirement.

 

Program and Tuition Fees

Program fees*: TBD. which includes room and board, cultural tours and activities, and international health insurance.

* Participants must pay all tuition & program fees before the departure date.

 

Tuition costs: $181.00/credit for NY residents; $442.00/credit for out-of-state residents

Application Deadline

Applications are due November 1st and are considered on a first come first served basis; applicants will be notified when accepted.
