Euripides wrote Orestes as a response to the turmoil caused by the Peloponnesian War, not long before Athens succumbed to the social and political chaos that would bring about the demise of her glorious empire. An Evening of Russian Theatre
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
5:00pm - 7:00pm
Cabaret Underground, Staller Center 00003

Immerse yourself in the world of the 20th century
Russian theatre. Dark and funny, sophisticated and
simple, realistic and absurdist — often all of these
at the same time — post-Chekhovian Russian drama is
worth adding to your reading list, or, if you are an
actor or director, including in your repertoire. Enjoy
a reading of scenes from plays by
Nikolai Erdman,
Eugene Schwarz,
Aleksandr Volodin,
Aleksandr Vampilov,
and an adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Dog
Heart by Nicholas Rzhevsky, whose lecture on Russian
drama will precede the event.

Reception and discussion will follow.
The readings will be in English.

Lecture by Nicholas Rzhevsky, Professor and Chair of
the Department of European Languages, Literatures, and
Cultures.

Curated by Anna Shulgat, Fulbright Visiting Scholar.

Suggested Donation $3
