A Stony Brook Learning Community is a group of students who take interconnected classes together. Instructors collaborate on the content of all the courses, coordinate instruction, and apply material in one course to that in others, thereby reinforcing learning in all of them. The heart of our learning community is a linking seminar that helps you to develop learning skills and abilities for success in college and careers and to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by a research university.

As a member of the Learning Communities Program, you will receive the advantages of a small college learning environment with the resources of a major research institution . This environment will help to increase your success in college, develop new friendships, enjoy your freshman experience, develop skills sought by future employers, and interact with prominent faculty and advisors. Stony Brook's Learning Communities Program has been created to help you make a successful transition to university-level work.
