The new Faculty Director is Dr. Wilbur (Bill) Miller from the Department of History. An undergraduate at Berkeley in the 1960s, he did his doctoral work at Columbia University and has been at Stony Brook since 1975. His research interests include police history; representations of crime and criminal justice in popular literature; and the overall theme of Authority in America -- how our institutions and practices of political authority are similar to and different from those of other nations. As well as teaching a history of crime and criminal justice course, he has offered classes on the Civil War and Reconstruction, history of New York City, immigration and family history, and famous American murder cases. He has a great deal of experience in student advising, having served as history's undergraduate program director, and is currently advisor to the history honor society and the Multidisciplinary Studies Program.
The new Director is Gabrielle Tobin. Ms. Tobin is already very familiar with Stony Brook, coming to us from the Provost's office. Previously, she worked in the Department of Mathematics and the School of Nursing, and managed the Mathematics in Finance program at the Courant Institute of NYU. Both here at Stony Brook and at NYU, she has experience working with academically high-achieving undergraduates.
